Concept

This is a concept project, made to show how we’d plan, design and build work like this. There’s no real client behind it.

N° 03 · Fieldnotes journalWhat we set out to do

The brief

Fieldnotes is an imagined food and travel magazine running on an old theme and a stack of plugins. Pages were slow on phones and the editors were nervous about touching the layout. So we planned a rebuild on a custom block theme they can run on their own.

Requirements4 must-haves

What it
had to do.

  1. 01Load quickly on phones, where most readers are
  2. 02Give editors a few custom blocks to lay out features
  3. 03Keep years of existing posts and their links
  4. 04Add a newsletter sign-up that doesn’t get in the way

Pages we designed

  • 01Home
  • 02Feature story
  • 03Category page
  • 04Author page
  • 05Newsletter

DecisionsWhy it looks the way it does

Three choices
that shaped it.

01

Blocks made for the magazine

Pull quotes, photo essays and recipe cards are their own blocks, styled once, so every feature looks right.

02

Old links keep working

Every old URL maps to its new home before launch, so shared links still work and search engines can follow the move.

03

Fewer plugins to worry about

What the theme can do itself, it does. That leaves less to update and less that can break.

How we’d build it

Tell us what you’re building.

A few lines about the project are enough. You’ll hear back from the people who’d do the work, with a fixed quote to follow. Rather talk first? Pick a time that suits you.
